Indian lottery company Kerala State Lotteries runs a weekly lottery called Karunya Lottery. It was founded in 2011 with the principal aim of raising money to treat severely ill but economically disadvantaged promi moderneople medically. Because of the lottery's charitable purpose, the name "Karunya" means "compassion" in Malayalam. A part of the lottery's earnings goes to the Karunya Benevolent Fund, which helps those in need afford medical care. Tickets can be purchased for the draws at approved locations across Kerala, and they take place every Saturday. There are several prize tiers in the lottery, including a sizable jackpot.
